Tanjungpinang

Tanjungpinang has been known as the capital of the Riau Archipelago Province since 2004. This city had been known for a long time because it was in a strategic position on the island of Bintan as the center of Malay culture and trade traffic. Tanjungpinang became known since Admiral Tun Abdul Jamil, on the orders of Sultan Abdul Jalisyah, opened a new area entirely at the Hulu Carang River in 1673. Tanjungpinang grew more dominant after the outbreak of the civil war in 1719.

From 1782 to 1784, the period of the Riau Malay Kingdom against the Dutch colonialists, Tanjungpinang was made a stronghold because of its strategic position. Victory and defeat took turns between the Kingdom of Riau and the Netherlands. Tanjungpinang was used as a Dutch military and trade base. The Dutch built facilities to support their government widely in Tanjungpinang in the 1780s, such as governorates, schools, museums, courts, and prisons. Tanjungpinang was made the center of the Residency government by the Dutch, which made Tanjungpinang increasingly exist in the early 1900s until the arrival of Japan to Riau. During the Japanese colonial era, Tanjungpinang also held an important position because it was used as the center of the Japanese government in Riau.

After the independence of Indonesia, Tanjungpinang once again played an essential role in the Indonesian struggle. The Dutch initially designated Riau Archipelago as an area that had its own separate government from Riau. However, over time, the position of the initial resident of independence was removed so that it was re-established. This caused Tanjungpinang to become the capital of the Riau Residency and the Riau Islands Regency. Tanjungpinang's position as the capital of Riau province did not last long because it was moved to Pekanbaru in 1960. The relocation of the capital city caused Tanjungpinang to impact its development significantly. However, Tanjungpinang still had an important position in defense and security. Tanjungpinang was one of the Indonesian Navy's Marine Defense and the IV Naval Main Base Headquarters centers.

On October 18, 1983, the Regent of Riau Islands Regency proposed to make Tanjungpinang an administrative city based on Government Regulation No. 31 of 1983. With the Regional Autonomy Law, Tanjungpinang became an autonomous region in 2001. Tanjungpinang was a city with a crucial role and historical value in the struggle for Indonesia's independence.

Putra Lokan

Once upon a time, on the headwaters of Bintan, there was a kingdom in a just and prosperous land that was led by a king. The life of the king and queen was harmonious and happy. Yet, they had no child even though they had been married for dozens of years.

One day, the king saw his wife was languid and sad, so he said, "My wife, why are you sad? Please, tell me. Do not bottle it up."
"My husband, we have been married for a long time. But, we haven't got a descendant. I really want a child," answered her languidly.
Hearing her words, the king said, "We pray and leave it all to God. Perhaps we have not been trusted yet to have a child." The queen nodded.

One time, the king and the queen walked around the Bintan river with the queen's maids 2 weeks ago. Having a good time talking, suddenly the queen fainted. The maids were shocked looking at what happened, and the situation became panic. Then, the maids brought the queen to the palace while the king was calling a physician. The queen looked pale from enduring pain and vomiting water that made her helpless. The physician, who came to heal the queen, laughed.
This made the king angry and said, “Hey, physician. Why do you laugh when my wife suffers? What do you mean? Tell me."
“My goodness, King. The queen is not sick. On the contrary, this is a sign of happiness. I laughed at the foolishness of the maids who didn't know that the queen was vomiting and nauseous because she was pregnant with the King's first child.” said the physician. The king finally announced the good news to the people of Bintan and held a festive party.

Nine months and ten days had passed, the queen was in labor. The people of Bintan gathered to welcome the birth of the crown prince. How disappointed they were because it turned out that the queen did not give birth to the expected son but a lokan (clam). The royal treasurer influenced the indecisive king to order the guards to expel the queen and the lokan she gave birth to from the palace and throw them in the forest.

In the forest, there lived a grandmother named Kebayan. Grandma Kebayan approached the queen that was crying alone under the tree late that night. The queen pleaded with grandma Kebayan, "I am an unfortunate person. I'm lost here. If you are willing, can I take shelter at your house?"
The kind grandmother replied, "If you are willing to huddle in my small and cramped hut and eat sweet potatoes and taro, I am happy to accept you to live with me." It was at grandma Kebayan's house that the queen finally lived. The lokan she carried was placed in a pool and grew larger from time to time.

Eighteen years had passed. The four-cubits long lokan opened its shell slwoly in the pool on a full moon. From the shell, came out a young boy who was gallant and handsome. The queen and Grandma Kebayan were talking. The two of them who saw this were surprised.
The queen asked the young man, “Who exactly are you, young man? Why did you get out of there?”
The young man spoke to the queen and grandma Kebayan. "Mother and Grandmother, don't be afraid. I am your son, Mother, whom you have taken good care of.
The queen rose from her seat. She hugged her son while she was sobbing.

After a discussion, the queen and Putra Lokan decided to return to Bintan to see his father’s kingdom. They set up cottages in the suburb of the land and disguised themselves, so they would not be suspected by the royal guards. Grandmother Kebayan became a florist, the queen became a lace knitter, and Putra Lokan became a peddler.

Some time passed, Putra Lokan realized that his father was no longer the king of Bintan. The kingdom had been led by the evil treasurer. The treasurer locked the king in the poison well. The queen was sad, knowing that it was the treasurer who seized her husband's power. Putra Lokan strategized against the treasurer and to save his father.

After quelling the treasurer's power, Putra Lokan regained the kingdom of Bintan. Putra Lokan went to find his father in the poison well and freed him. The king was surprised by the arrival of Putra Lokan and thanked Putra Lokan for saving him.
After coming out, the king asked, "Young man, who exactly are you?"
With a smile, Putra Lokan replied, “I am nobody. Let my mother answer that later. In a moment, she will be here.”

The queen came. The king was again shocked to see his wife, whom he had dumped eighteen years ago. The queen told the king about the young man who saved him. The king was happy to know that the handsome and gallant young man was his biological son. However, he was ashamed and regretful for having thrown them both in the forest. The king also apologized to his wife and Putra Lokan, his son. They both forgave the king's mistakes.

The king brought the queen and his son back to live in the palace. The queen and Putra Lokan brought grandmother Kebayan to live with them as well. They lived together in Bintan happily.
